1. The 1996 Statistical Abstract reported approximately 25% of the US population were smokers. Historically college students and people with college educations have smoked at lower levels than people not attending college. Results of a 1993 Harvard School of Public Health survey of students at 116 four-year colleges in 39 states found 22.3% of the students were smokers. In 1997 the survey was repeated. Of 14,500 college students surveyed, 4130 were smokers.
What proportion of college students now smoke? 2. Both fatal and injury auto accident rates are dropping even though we
are driving more miles. Nationally, fatal accident rates in dropped from 1.5 per 100
million miles in 1995 to 1.29 per 100 million miles in 1997. Traffic safety agencies investigate the factors which change the probability of accidents. One factor which has led to this drop is that cars are safer. Many now have airbags and ABS brakes. Can you think of other possible factors? 3. Males represent 51% of drivers but were the drivers in 63% of property
vehicle accidents in 1995. What variable might be important to consider when investigating whether males are more likely than females to be involved in property vehicle accidents? |
