Virtual Ergonomics
Take Care of Your Body In Cyberspace
Suzanne Miller, Instructor

YOUR BODY
If our class were meeting face to face (ftf) for a computer workshop I would periodically call for breaks and encourgage you to get up, stretch, walk around. Because you are taking this class via the Web you need to think about ergonomics: the science of how objects and the body work together optimally...
EYES
Minimize glare from the computer screen.
Look up from the screen every ten minutes or so, look left, look right, to change your focal length. Every hour get up, stretch, and look across a large distance across the street, the yard, or the bay. (Someday...)
HANDS
The opposing thumb has really made a difference to humans. Take care of your hands. They will be your main communication tool in this class. Periodically stretch out your arms to the side. Point left fingers up, right findgers down, then reverse, and repeat several times
Follow by squeezing your hands tight, then open hands and relax, and repeat.
HEAD and NECK
Periodically roll your shoulders in circles back, then forward.
Roll your head first counterclockwise then clockwise several times.
BACK and KNEES
Make sure you sit in a comfortable chair and use good posture. Be sure to get up every 45 to 60 minutes to stretch your back and flex your knees. Some scientists claim the knees are first to go and you will miss them when they are gone.
COMPUTER TIME
Computer time is often not the same as regular time. Computer colleagues swear if you think a task will take one hour at the computer, often 3 hours are consumed. Mathematicians use pi. Please be aware of time and take breaks to practice good cyber fitness.
