Mathematics A Practical Odyssey, Third Edition
by Dave Johnson & Tom Mowry (Two DVC Instructors), Brooks/Cole Publishing Company ISBN 0-534-35075-5

Using A Calculator You will need a scientific calculator to solve problems in this course. At a minimum it must be capable of using exponents, and finding the mean and standard deviation of statistical data. I recommend the TI-30. which costs about $12. If you already have or can borrow a graphing calculator such as a TI 83, even better. The Third Edition of the text explains how to use both calculators.

Course Notebook At the start of the course, set up a three ring binder with four sections. Bring this with you to the on campus meetings.
Section 1: assignments, email addresses of class partners.
Section 2: Questions/notes as you read, browse the Web, receive email
Section 3: Completed homework assignments by number
Section 4: Practice exams, exams and their corrections.

Study Groups
You are encouraged to form a study group (virtual or otherwise)with your classmates. Many students feel these are particularly helpful in online courses. You may arrange to use a study room in the Math Lab to meet.

Math Lab
DVC and CHE both have Math Labs to answer questions. The DVC Lab is open 8 am to 10 pm M-Th and 8 am -4 pm on Fri. also open most weedends 12-5. For more information visit the DVC Math Lab Webpage.

Grades
Grades are determined by an accumulation of points on homework, exercises and feedback, papers, quizzes, and exams. The following percentages apply:

Homework, Quizzes and Notebook 30% 90-100% A
Three module exams 35% 80-89 % B
Final Exam 25% 70-79 % C
Exercises and Feedback 10% 60-69 % D

I will drop the lowest module exam grade. If there is an exam conflict see me before the exam to arrange a test time in our assessment center. There are no make-ups after the course meeting but you are expected to complete every exam even if you miss the test. After each exam you will correct your errors for additional points. The exams and practice exams will be your best resources when preparing for the final.

Class Participation
You are expected to attend every class meeting and arrive punctually. I will be asking for weekly email feedback and assignments. If I do not hear from you for two weeks may be dropped from the course.

Academic Dishonesty
You will be writing papers and taking exams in this course. Students found cheating or plagiarizing will be subject to the student codes of conduct disciplinary proceedures and risk their student standing at DVC.
