You will need a calculator to solve homework problems and take exams in this course. Make sure you are able to use your calculator skillfully by the time you take the first exam.

Our text, Mathematics A Practical Odyssey, Third Edition contains the calculator keystrokes needed to solve every example problem. In addition, the text has two Appendices which have step-by-step explanations of how to use calculators.

There are also many specialized calculators on the Web you can use to check your answers automatically.

Scientific Calculators A scientific calculator is the minimum requirement for the course. Your calculator must be capable of using exponents, and finding the mean and standard deviation of statistical data. I recommend the TI-30 from Texas Instruments which costs about $12. Appendix 1 of out text explains how to use a scientific calculator.

Graphing Calculators If you already have or can borrow and learn to use a graphing calculator such as a TI 83, even better. Graphing calculators are demonstrated in Appendix II of the text.

Web Calculators As you browse the Web you will find many sites which have specialized calculators. Here is a website which contains several calculators for investments and loans: Financial Calculators
